How long is a training session?

I got asked this question by one of my clients the other day and felt that it was a good one to include here:

Q: I've heard in a previous interview where you mention that billing 'by the hour' is irrelevant when it comes to training people. I just can't get my head around this -- how do you charge people and why isn't time still a factor? Do you call the workouts "mini-sessions" or something?


A: When you want to travel cross country in the USA -- you can choose a flight, or you can choose a bus right?

The bus takes way longer than a flight -- but costs less. It's not about the length of time -- it's about the destination -- the result -- and how it is delivered. In this case -- it's the REVERSE of billing by time -- as the shortest time costs the most money.

A haircut? The barber or hairdresser completes the task and is paid by the task - not by how long it takes. A doctor? Does he or she charge you more if they talk to you for longer? Experts don't get paid by the hour - they get paid by the result.

Back to training - where did an hour of training come from anyway? Is there a science journal out there that I don't now about that showed an hour of training to be more effective than 50 minutes?

An hour is just a measure of time. What you are really doing within that hour is X number of sets of Y number of reps right? Let's say you do 8 exercises, 3 sets of 10 reps each for 24 total sets and 240 total reps.

Then someone else hires you -- and when designing their program you come up with 7 exercises, and 3 sets of 8 reps each. 21 total sets and 168 total reps.

Does the second client get a discount because they did "less"? Of course not. You are using a tool to deliver the result. If you design a perfect program that can be done in 45 minutes -- do you add another 33% more work to fill in the time (and thereby move away from your perfect program)?

You need to change your mindset.

Jim Rohn has a statement that says

"You don't get paid for the hour -- you get paid for the value you bring to that hour"

I'd even go beyond that.

The lowest paid people in the world think that they get paid for the hour of work. That's why they stay low paid. The guy who works at the grocery store thinks he's getting paid for the hours he stands there. And until he changes that paradigm he'll always be a low paid 'by the hour' worker.

More successful people think like Jim Rohn and they think they get paid for the value that they create within that time frame.

The most successful people understand that the time spent is irrelevant, it's ONLY the value. So they no longer think in terms of time -- and if they do -- it's in reverse -- that getting the job done faster is worth more.

If I can deliver the perfect training program to get your result in 30 mins, and another coach needs an hour -- am I not worth more? I can deliver the result in half the time that they can - I should be worth at least twice as much.

In training (and in most things - including business) the result is the ONLY thing that matters -- designing programs or charging 'by the hour' is not thinking about value first. I actually pride myself on making the workouts no longer than they need to be. In my opinion doing one extra set is far worse than not doing enough.

So what do I call a 25 min training session?

Same as what I call a 15 min training session. A training session.

Create workouts that work and deliver results. Don't write workouts to fill in a slot of time.

One is a very tiny number. However, it can have a tremendous impact on your life.

  • Make one more call every day at work. One extra call a day equals 260 calls in a year. How many meetings could you set up with this number of calls and how many of those meetings could you turn into sales? Consider your current conversion ratio and think of the impact on your business.
  • Invest one day per month developing your skills. Many of the most successful people in business invest in themselves. They attend workshops, conferences, and participate in webinars and tele-seminars on a regular basis. Because the majority of people do not develop their skill, you can quickly out-pace your coworkers and competition.
  • Read one book every month. Expanding your knowledge will help you become more successful. Read books related to your industry or that will provide i nsight to helping you improve your skill in a specific area.
  • Ask one more question. Before you starting “pitching” your product or service, ask your prospect one more question. This question might give you the additional insight you need to more effectively position your product or service.
  • Pause for one moment. Known as the pregnant pause, this often prompts the other person to blurt out something they had not intended to say. The secret behind this strategy is that most people are uncomfortable with silence and will begin talking to fill the “dead” air space.
  • Get to the office one hour early. Remember the expression “The early bird gets the worm.” That one extra hour first thing in the morning can be the most productive time of the day. You have a better chance to reach decision-makers, there are fewer distractions, and you can often achieve more in those 60 minutes than in several hours later in the day.
  • Send one more email. Sometimes, people need that little push and encouragement to move forward. But, many cases, their time is occupied by other projects and priorities which means they are not focused on your solution. Gentle reminders are often appreciated providing you don’t follow up so frequently you appear to be stalking them. Even though they may not be ready to make that particular buying decision, you will help keep your name in their mind.
  • Ask one more time for an endorsement or testimonial. Endorsements and testimonials are greatly underutilized by most people in business today. We often ask a client for a testimonial but because they have other priorities, they forget. Call them or send an email and politely request the testimonial again.
  • Give one more suggestion. Schedule a breakfast meeting or lunch with your customers but instead of trying to sell them something, focus on offering solutions that do not include your products or services and your customers will begin to see you more as a partner than a supplier.
  • Send one more thank you card or note. Very few sales people make the effort to thank their customers. You can stand out from the crowd by sending handwritten notes to thank customers for their most recent order, meeting with you, or sending an on-time payment. You can also send a note when you see their company mentioned favorably in the news.

LOW-FAT

I have just been reading a study that highlighted when people were given a choice of low-fat food or regular food they ate 32% more of the low-fat offering!
This is bad choice, as these low-fat choices are full of artificial substances and unnatural sugars that actually signal your body to store fat (see my earlier blogs on weight loss)
HOWEVER,
I am amazed at how the "low-fat" sticker helps encourage greater consumption. So in this case (And because Pineapple is only highly "nutrient-dense" in the sense of wellness and health it will provide to your body, and accelerate you towards your targets.)

This effect appears to result from adaptation of neural factors such as motor unit excitability (recruitment and firing frequency, conduction velocity of excitation) in response to sensory receptor stimulation. Muscle vibration may increase the training effects derived from light-to-moderate exercise.

CONCLUSION: The result showed the influence of WBV frequency on acute adaptive responses. In particular, the untrained subjects in this particular study, showed acute enhancement in neuromuscular performance with low frequency vibration.

Overview: The group with the low frequency (Pineapple style) hugely outperformed the other group at the frequencies employed by competitive products.

Reading

What's the Pineappleologist currently reading?
I often re-read books several times.

Currently I am re-reading "Spiritual Economics" by Eric Butterworth. An absolue gem of guidance.

However I had a target I had committed myself to. There are 5 key laws to ensure you achieve your target
1. The law of straight lines - ie.Understanding the most efficient solution is a straight line between you and your desired action
2. The law of clear vision - ie. A very clear concpet of exactly what you want to achieve
3. The law of focussed attention - ie. a laser zone into only your target.
4. The law of focussed energy - ie. to galvanize all your input into your specific target
5. The law of action/reaction - ie. Everything you do either moves you nearer your target or further away.

Fat Loss 2
